    Biography of John Grisham
    Devaun Swafford
John Grisham was born on February 8, 1955 in Jonesboro, Arkansas. As a child John dreamed of being a professional baseball player. He began to realize the likely hood in going pro was slim and decided to just go to school where he majored in accounting at the University of Mississippi. He then attended law school at the University of Ole Miss and graduated in 1981. In 1983, he was elected into the state House of Representatives and served until 1990. His famous book The Firm got his on the New York Times bestsellers list and it became the bestselling Novel in the year 1991. Since publishing his first book in 1988 called “A Time to Kill”he has published a book every year after and all of them have become international best sellers. Grisham lives with his wife Renee and his two children Ty and Shea on a farm in Mississippi. In his free time he devotes it to charitable causes and also keeps up with his childhood/greatest passion baseball. He is the local little league baseball commissioner and had six baseball fields built on his property so that he could host the kid’s league teams and watch them play.
    Characters
Eddie Rake - The legendary head coach at Messina who has been coaching them to victory year by year for the last 34 years. He is dying of cancer and he was fired for causing the death of one of his players because of his harsh conditioning.
Neely Crenshaw – He is the main character in the story and he was one of best players to come from Messina. He had a bright future ahead of him and then he hurt his knee in college and his future faded away. Now he returns to his hometown 15 years later.
Silo Mooney – He is now a local owner of a body shop and on the side he has an illegal chop shop. He was considered one of the most dominant players in Messina in his day.
Paul Curry – Not only another hero on the team but he was Neely’s best friend and favorite Wide Receiver. Now Paul is a banker in Messina because he had to take over his father’s business.
    Summary
Messina High School had winning football teams under its legendary coach, Eddie Rake for 34 years. There was one streak of four years in a row where they won every game. Neely Crenshaw the former high school all American quarterback at Messina high school was on his way to the NFL when a heart breaking knee injury wiped away his future. Coach Rake is dying of cancer and many of his old players have come back to show their respect and look back on the old days. A few memories stuck out from all the others about coach Rake and that was his mean personality, the horrible language when a player missed a tackle, and the harsh workouts in full pads. Coach Rake was the type of coach who would accept absolutely no excuses for failure. This is the reason he produced winning teams year after year and that made the players into local heroes. All of the former players gathered in small groups in the bleachers of the stadium and just drank a few beers and talked about their current lives and their memories of past success on the football field. They all seem to get the same old memories when they really look back on the past in their football program. They all have certain thing in life that the coach has taught them weather they realize it or not. The town policeman’s certain thing was a brutal experience in Vietnam which he survived only because he had learned from his coach never to give up. Another former player gives credit to coach Rake for giving him the courage to face the obstacles of being openly gay. Silo Mooney is one of those characters you have to have in a book to make it funny he is one of my favorites because he just seems like a cool dude that doesn’t care what people thinks. Neely who was the star football player at Messina had to speak at the coach’s funeral and it was hard for him because of his love hate relationship with him. All of the players hated the coach because of the way he acted. Coach Rake comes off as a coach who doesn’t care about anything but winning. No feelings getting hurt, no parents getting mad, no politics, no anything, just winning! Neely has to forgive coach Rake and himself before he can get on with his life and live happy. He also tries to get his ex girlfriend to forgive him for what he did to her in high school.
    Review
I would recommend this book to people who like drama and sports. Football players can really relate to this and maybe have a coach or know a coach out there who is like Coach Rake. I really liked this book because it teaches you to appreciate what you have and don’t want too much. My favorite character in the book was Neely Crenshaw because he was a high school all American and I know that it took hard work to get there. I also know that he has to be a very strong person because he lost his future of being in the NFL. I couldn’t imagine what would happen if that happened to me. Readers will not be disappointed if they read this in fact they might appreciate it and get a life lesson taught to them. It really makes you take a step back and look at your own life and it reminds you that life isn’t all about fame and popularity. Life is about being happy and making the best out of every opportunity that life throws at you. John Grisham is a really good author and is very creative. The main reason I like the book so much was probably because I am a football player myself and can relate to the memories the former players had about the team and the whole football program. If you really want a few pointers about life then you should definitely read John Grisham books. Also it could just bring back memories of when you were in high school and all of the old friends you had and maybe you might want to have a little get together and discuss your old high school memories. If you are the type of reader who is lazy and doesn’t like to read a whole lot this book is not really that long and really keeps you engaged while you are reading it. This might also be a good book for your classroom to read if you are a teacher who is unsure of what to read as a class book. I truly believe that John Grisham is a major sports fan and relates to these books because he was once in high school and had a dream of going pro just like Neely but didn’t have the skill. So when he writes these books I believe that he wrote this book based on what he wanted and maybe placed himself in Neelys shoes and just somehow lived a fantasy through this novel. So my overall review is that this was a very interesting book that I could relate to and will keep you engaged throughout the whole book.

    Book Review
I highly recommend the reading of Skipping Christmas by John Grisham because it is a very great read. It is not very long but it tells a very good and inspirational story. It is so good that it was made into a movie called Christmas with the Kranks, directed by Joe Ruth. But back to the book, Skipping Christmas tells a great story about how you should always cherish the time you have with the people you love around Christmas time. John Grisham is a much respected author that has written a ton of books, and even though this doesn’t rank with the ones he has written in the past, I still recommend it. John Grisham really hit the head on the needle in this book, when he specifies the craziness and surprises that Christmas brings every year. He shows how much hustle and bustle goes into getting ready for the holiday that everyone waits for each year. From the parties, decorations, presents, and Christmas cards he shows how much time and effort goes into getting ready for Christmas. He shows how all this money is spent for all these things just for one holiday that will never be used again. He also shows how the Christmas season can change the hearts of others and their Christmas spirit. He portrays Luther as this Scrooge type figure, that hates Christmas and everything that is involved. But later in the story he shows how when everybody comes together as a family, it is truly a beautiful thing. He also shows how even though it is a beautiful holiday; it can also come with some unexpected surprises. I believe he does a tremendous job of portraying everything that takes place in this holiday. You never really realize what all goes into this event until you break it down like Grisham does. This upcoming Christmas you should keep up with all your transactions and see how much you are spending for this special holiday. It is crazy how much money and chaos one day could stir up. He also shows how the Christmas spirit can turn worst enemies into friends. Christmas time is about giving and making others happy, and I believe he got that point across very well. It is truly amazing how one day can change your whole perspective of life. Christmas sort of brings everyone together and tha is why it is one of my favorite holidays. It is not always about the presents and decorations, but spending time with the people you love and having a good time. It does not really tell about the true meaning of Christmas but it still tells a good story. Grisham is mainly known for his sports books but shows his precise skill as a writer in this novel, and that he can write any sort of book. I respect him as an author and plan on reading more of his books as well. I am not a very big fan of reading but this book made me realize how fun and inspirational it can be.

Mr. Wolf-Ben and Cody's dad. Lives a miserable life because all he does is take care of his wife that has a alcohol and drug problem.
Mrs. Wolf-Ben and Cody's mother. Has a major alcohol and drug problem. She's never been a true mother to her sons. She is always having a "crash" where she has mental breakdowns.
    Brief Summary
What would you do if you knew that you only had one year left to live, and you were only a senior in high school? That is the way that Ben Wolf lives. Ben Wolf is an average high school student; he doesn’t have the perfect life. He is not very good looking, skinny, not very athletic except for running, but one thing that he has going for him is that he is very smart. His brother is the exact opposite, he is the star quarterback of the football team, strong, good looking, but he does not have the brains in the family. The brothers are best friends. Ironically, they pretty much can’t live without each other. These two have had to grow up by themselves because of their home-life is not the best due to their mothers’ bad alcohol and drug problem since as long as they remember. As soon as you get into the story you find out that Ben is diagnosed with a terminal blood disease and has one year to live. Unlike most teenagers that receive news like this, Ben decides to not tell anyone because he wants to live a “normal” life. Soon to realize, this task is going to be harder than expected. While Ben sleeps, he dreams about a guy named “Hey-Soos”, who gives him advice about his situation, but Ben never knows what to do even with the advice because he sees the good and bad results of it. Ben has two things that he wants to accomplish in the short amount of time he is left on this Earth: Get the girl of his dreams, Dallas Suzuki, and become the star of the football team, which he has never played in his life. Ben is starting to finally live his life, he’s starting to become more outspoken, stand up for himself, and become a man. He decides that he is going to try out for the football team because he doesn’t have anything to lose. He knows that he more than likely won’t ever play; he just wants to see what it’s like to be in the limelight. In the middle of the season, Ben gets his opportunity to play in the game, and he definitely takes advantage of it. By the end of the game, he is the hero, and he has earned his spot to start on the team. He is the brains behind the defense and the offense because his brother wouldn’t be half the player he is if it wasn’t for Ben helping him on his reads. Ben being the star of the football team now gets his chance with Dallas Suzuki, his dream girl. He has become so close to her that she trusts him with everything. She even tells Ben her big secret that only her mom knows, so he feels the need to tell her his secret, but he can’t. So he’s taking the risk in hurting her instead of telling her immediately. They fall in love with each other and he still hasn’t told her about his disease, nothing good will come of this. Ben has made a new friend named Rudy McCoy, the town drunk, and Ben is the only one that sees good in him. So he lends a helping hand and tries to get him healthy. While they are spending time together they realize they share the love of Malcolm X. As long as Ben continues to help him, Rudy continues to teach him about Malcolm X. Over time Ben uses his knowledge on Malcolm X to anger his teacher, Mr. Lambeer, that he believes is a liar. Ben decides to do a project on Malcolm X knowing the consequences of it. His teacher threatens to fail him if the project isn’t successful. In the last few months of his life he decides to tell the people that he cares about. He understands that this will result in badly, but he’d rather do it now then them finding out after the fact. When he tells Dallas, she becomes furious because she trusted him with everything, and she ends their relationship basically. He tells his brother and he doesn’t know what to say, it’s like him losing the other half of his body, but he understands and wants to “live it up” while he’s still here. He also tells his coach, who has been through a tough loss, when he lost his high school sweetheart. At Ben’s graduation, he is able to make it, but he’s there in spirit. He wrote a letter that he was going to read if he was there, but he had to get his brother read it. Ben may have waited too long to start living his life, but he made sure that he would be remembered for numerous reasons. I guess you could say that he died a happy young man.

    Review
People in this world, including me, do not realize how valuable life is. You never know how quickly and easily life can be taken from you. This book is a prime example of that, you can be living a normal life, then the next day you find out it might be too late to live your life to the fullest. Even though there is a slim chance of losing your life at a young age, the book teaches you that you should not ever take advantage of your life. I have never learned so much about life through a book; it shows you the highs and the lows. I hope that I would never receive news like this for me or anyone I know, but if I ever did I hope that I would be able to say that I’m happy with my life as it is and I wouldn’t have to make any drastic changes. I’ve learned in life to live as much as you can with as little regrets as possible. As a football player, my favorite part in the story was when Ben became the hero as he leaped for the game winning catch from his brother. I loved reading about the joy in his life after that. The thing about Ben is that he was happy for himself, but ecstatic for his team because they got the win in the end. He didn’t get a big head like most people would, even after he was deemed the starting free safety on the team, he was just happy that he got the opportunity to play the game of football. Many people are afraid to get hurt playing the game, but Ben is willing to risk his own life to play it. This book has really taught me many things about life. It showed me what the important things are, and who really matter in your life and no matter what, they will be the ones always by your side. If you are a person that does not know the true meaning of life, I highly recommend this book to young or adult reader!

I liked this book a lot. The author uses the story of a football player and twists in with it a story about someone finding out who they are. Tim Tharp did a good job in using Hampton’s life to create a very appealing book to a wide variety of readers. I would recommend this book to anyone out there trying to find a good book to read. This story was well written to show the struggles that Hampton went through within himself as he evolved in becoming the person he truly wants to be.

    ...
In the John Grisham novel, The Street Lawyer, Michael starts out the book to be another prospering young lawyer hoping to make it to a partnership in his near future. The change he goes through is quite remarkable within the next 32 days of his life. The stating day of this divine intervention is an awakening to Michael when he is held hostage with eight other of his colleagues by “Mister.” As I read through the story I noticed how much and how drastically the kidnapping changed ONLY Michael, but not the other lawyers. Out of the nine who were captured it seemed only Michael comprehended the message that was delivered by “Mister.” The message was as basic as any, help the less fortunate. Through the next month of Brock’s life he took action in response to the message, even! While going through a divorce. This Grisham classic made me wonder just how many homeless there are. It also made me ponder how many very fortunate and blessed people there are with plenty of money there are too. Why? Well, it seems that, for the lawyers at Drake & Sweeney they work religiously for money and hopes of becoming a partner. Yet, they don’t enjoy their hard earned money, because they work constantly. So instead they just hoard it up in their bank accounts to collect dust. While there are thousands of homeless who could just use a couple of bucks to get their next meal, because that’s what most worry about religiously. I’m impressed by how Michael takes a step down to practice his knowledge of the law by taking in cases of the homeless and also by how he volunteers RELIGIOUSLY at the local soup kitchens in the D.C. setting. Not only does he do these things but he also looks into the “Mister’s” life and why he decided to hold him captive. Michael also looked into the death of a family he just met on his first night of volunteering and worked vigorously to show them justice to the rest of world. The great thing about that is that it did show justice and paid off for Brock and his homeless clients. In the end Grisham shows the eye-awakening power that justice can have. The very last chapter paints this well too. Arthur Jacobs, the Drake & Sweeney senior partner, comes to Brock and confronts his guilt about how he has never really helped the homeless. It shows that even senior partners need help sometimes too. Help to open their eyes and see that there is a world around them. That money isn’t everything, and that it’s only humbling and strengthening to you to help the lowly. I have to say that I really don’t like to read at all, but I really enjoyed this book and Grisham’s writing style and perspective of difficulties in the world. There’s no doubt that I would rate this book a very good book and on a scale of one to five I’d give it a four-point-seven.

    John Grisham Biography
John Ray Grisham, Jr. was born on February 8, 1955 in Jonesboro, Arkansas. His parents, Wanda Skidmore Grisham and John Grisham, had six kids with John being the second oldest. His mom, a homemaker, and his dad, a construction worker and cotton farmer, worked hard to prepare their kids for college. Despite the fact that both of the parents lacked a formal education, Grisham wandered so much during college that he ended up changing colleges three times before completing a degree. He eventually graduated from Mississippi State University in 1977, receiving a BS degree in accounting. He later attended the University Of Mississippi School Of Law in 1981 and practiced criminal law for about a decade. He even served in the House of Representatives of Mississippi for about six years (1984-1990). Grisham married Renee Jones on May 8, 1981 and they have two kids: Shea and Ty. Grisham had his first novel, A Time To Kill, in June 1989. His inspiration to write this book and to begin writing came a court case in 1984, where a little girl was beaten and raped by her own father. Grisham said as he looked around the court room and saw as the jury cried when she told them this horrific story, that a story was born.

    Book Summary
Skipping Christmas by John Grisham is a book about Christmas, obviously, and not taking the time you spend with your friends and family during Christmas for granted. The main family is this book is the Kranks, who consist of Nora(Mother), Luther(Father), and Blair(Daughter). Blair is going on a trip to western Peru to teach a small school for the Peace Corps. She will be gone for a year and will unfortunately be missing Christmas with her family for the first time…ever. Nora, her mother, is devastated that she will not be with them this Christmas and never stops worry about Blair and her safety. With Blair leaving, Nora believes that this Christmas will not be the same without her. Which somehow got Luther thinking, how much do they really spend on one day of the year? He tallied up all the expenses from decorations, gifts, and entertainment with added up to about 6,100 dollars. He wonders to himself why do they put so much time and money into all these things that they will only use once. Then it came to him.. he was going to skip Christmas! He surprised Nora one day by telling her they were going to skip Christmas and go on a cruise on the Island Princess. Nora is skeptical at first but eventually agrees to the getaway, because she too does not want to go through the hustle and bustle of Christmas. When word gets out to their neighborhood and neighbors, they objected to their decision to skip the holiday. Not because they cared what the Kranks did, but because if they didn’t celebrate the holiday then they will more than likely not have any decorations up at their house. Every year there is a competition between the streets in the neighborhood to see which street is the best decorated, and with the Kranks not even acknowledging the holiday, their street was sure to lose. No Christmas tree, no frosty the snow man, no lights, no fire department calendar, no Christmas cards, and no fruitcakes. Luther Krank was determined to ignore Christmas completely and enjoy his cruise. Getting through the hard months of the scolds and torture from their own neighbors, their cruise was just one day away. It was Christmas Eve and it seemed like everything was going to change for the better until they got a surprising call from their daughter, Blair. She was at the Miami International Airport with her fiancé on her way home to surprise her parents. Nora and Luther had no idea what to do, to say the least. How could they tell their only daughter to turn around and go back because they were skipping Christmas to go on a cruise? Luther was actually considering but Nora couldn’t allow it and began setting up for her daughter’s arrival. They frantically called to send out last minute invites to their annual Christmas party that they had previously cancelled, and put up last minute decorations that they weren’t even considering putting up. Every one of their friends had already made other plans to go to different parties and Luther was not trying to put up the decorations. But it was for their little girl so they ended up inviting their neighbors to the party and Luther found it in him to put up the decorations. With a lot of hard work and a lot of patience, they got the party and house ready for their daughter and her fiancé’s first Christmas together. It ended up being a great success but there was still one thing to take care of. The Kranks were obviously not going on the cruise even though it had already been paid for, so Luther decided to give it to their neighbors, Bev and Walt Scheel. Bev was fighting cancer so Luther thought it would be nice to give it to them because it this might be the last Christmas the couple gets to spend together. In doing this, Luther finally realizes why this holiday is so special, and plans to never attempt to skip it again.

I guess you could say that he died a happy young man.

after that. If you are a person that does not know the true meaning of life, I highly recommend this book to young or adult reader!

    book review
I rank thisam not sure what I expected when picking up Jump, honestly it sounds like an ok book, a non assuming, summer read that's about rock climbing, with maybe a little twist. I enjoyed the nature that was in the books the way it was discribe was amazeing. on the back of the book it reads behind us i can hear them, crashing through the undergrowth, talking on there radios, coming closer. a 6tall pine stands at the edge. I run to and stop. far below the valley, laid out in greens and grays. below me is a sheer cliff all the way to the valley floor. i hear P.K ragged breathing beside me. you ready to lose them? i ask. she looks at me, confused. i take her shoulders and move her to the right of 10.the tree. i didnt likestand to the wayleft of it. on three we jump, i say. ready? she nods, but i can see the panic rising in her eyes and in her colers. dont think about it jumped aroundisay quickly. the voices are closer. one two three! Jump. That is what P.K. has done. A totally wild, crazy jump from persona restrictive life with her family into a life of total adventure—rock-climbing out west with a guy she barely knows. At first, everything’s amazing. Not only are they climbing in awesomely beautiful national parks like Yosemite but they seem awesomely made for one another. P.K. is in heaven. And then the cops show up . with an arrest warrant. And P.K. has to person it was very harddecide who to focus onbelieve this amazing guy whom she trusts with her life —or the story.it had a good poltcops, who want her to believe that he may take her life.

    ...
This story is about Hampton Green, a star linebacker on the football team in a small town in Oklahoma and depicts the life he lives. He lives with his mother after his father left them when he was little. He tends to spend most of his time with his best friend, Blaine. Hampton first met Blaine when he moved in to town after his dad left. They ran into each other when they were attending a ceremony for the star, T-Roy Strong, who played for the Knights and went on to play for the Dallas Cowboys and when a Superbowl. Hampton mainly grew up with Blaine and his family. He considered Mr. Keller to essentially be his own dad. Blaine had taught Hampton the game of football and was always the star. However, in their junior year Blaine had a knee injury against a rival team who was known for playing dirty. After his injury, he had never quite been the same. Most people did not notice Blaine’s knee bothering him, but Hampton could always see it. During their senior year they were striving to be undefeated for five straight seasons in a row. No team had done that since the great T-Roy Strong played. This year was different for both Hampton and Blaine. Hampton really stepped up and made big play after big play, but on the other side of the ball, Blaine just was not the same as he had used to be. Hampton was becoming the star and this was eating away at Blaine. Hampton didn’t care much for the lime light. He would rather Blaine be getting all the glory. Off of the field, Hampton does not always know what to say or do. He begins to start getting feelings for a girl in his history class, Sarah. Blaine, however, claims that she is not the type of girl a football player should be with. Blaine’s girlfriend is the prettiest girl in school and he thinks that Hampton should get a girl like her. Blaine sets Hampton up on a date with one of his girlfriend’s friends. She is nothing but trouble. She ends up sneaking off to talk to a couple of boys from the rival team that hurt Blaine’s knee the year before. Hampton does not care that much because he likes someone else, but Blaine gets really mad. He goes over to the three guys she is talking to and sucker punches the biggest right in the face. Hampton steps in to help Blaine, but by that time the cops are beginning to break up the fight. After this, Hampton is afraid to talk to the girl that he actually likes because of the fight. After a week or two, he musters up the courage to talk to her again. They end up planning to go on a date after the last football game. This last game has a lot of pressure with it because they have a chance to go for five perfect seasons. It is a tight score throughout the game, and ends in an unexpected way. The morning after the game, Hampton wakes up and takes the girl he truly likes on the date he has been waiting for for a long time.

My favorite part of the book was not necessarily one exact moment, but the whole idea that on the field he always knew exactly what to do, however off the field he struggled with finding the right words to say and how to act. I felt that it was very easily to relate to this part of the story. While playing the game he could almost freeze time and always end up at the right spot at the right time. However, as soon as he stepped off the field he would always struggle with what to say to people. Most of the time, if Blaine would insult him in some way, then he would just sit there and take it because he didn’t know how to respond back to it. It would always end up thinking of something good to say back to him later that night, which was too late by then. When he was with Sarah he finally began to feel comfortable with talking to her and not worrying about what to say. He was finally able to slow down time off of the field whenever he was with her. This raised his confidence level greatly.
